Pelgro Named Acting Middlesex DA

Gov. Deval Patrick plans to name a successor next week to outgoing Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone, according to the State House News Service.

Gov. Deval Patrick has named First Assistant District Attorney Michael Pelgro as the acting Middlesex County District Attorney to replace Gerry Leone.  Patrick, who made the announcement in a statement on Friday, April 12, plans to announce a permanent appointment to fill out Leone's term next week, according to the Lowell Sun. Voters will elect a new DA in the biennial election in 2014.  In January, Leone announced he would not seek a third term. In March, Leone announced he would join a private law firm. Middlesex D.A. Gerry Leone to Step Down, Will Join Scott Brown at Law Firm

Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.

Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody says Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. Woburn Newspaper Deliveryman Arranged on Fraud Charges

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public yesterday that Ikponmwosa Ogiugo, of Reading, was arraigned on charges of identity fraud, forgery and larceny.

A Reading resident who works as a newspaper deliver man in Woburn who is allegedly behind a string of identity fraud, fraud and larceny incidents, including some in Woburn, has been arraigned in district court. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public yesterday that Ikponmwosa Ogiugo, 22, of Reading, has been arraigned in Woburn District Court on charges of identity fraud (12 counts), forgery (23 counts), larceny over $250 (5 counts), and larceny over $250 by check. In total the incidents of identity fraud, forgery and larceny totaled more than $200,000, Leone's office stated. Fearing that the defendant, a native of Nigeria, posed a flight risk, the Commonwealth requested a $500,000 cash bail.  Woburn District Court …

John Kerry, who was just approved as the next Secretary of State, stopped by the Middlesex County District Attorney's office in Woburn yesterday for a visit.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office had a special guest on Thursday. Middlesex DA Gerry Leone welcomed John Kerry, who on Tuesday was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Secretary of State. Kerry was a senator for Massachusetts from 1985 until his resignation to take up his new position earlier this week. The stop was part of a tour Kerry is taking around the state as he prepares to take on his new responsibilities. His choice to stop by the Middlesex District Attorney's office was also a chance to catch up on an old place of employment. Middlesex County DA Announces He Won't Seek Third Term

Leone said he has no specific plans after he leaves office.

  Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone has announced he will not seek a third term in 2014, according to his office. Leone made the announcement during an awards ceremony with his staff on Jan. 10 “These decisions are, and should be, predicated upon what is best for the person and their family. What is best for me and my family is that I not seek another term. As someone who is much smarter than I am once said, ‘I must be willing to give up what I am, in order to become what I will be.’ Other than a husband and father, I am not yet sure what that will be when I am no longer a District Attorney,” Leone said in a statement. Prescription Drug Drop-Off Available at WPD

  Almost everyone has them—old, unused prescription drugs in their bathroom medicine cabinet. What do you do with them? Starting next week, you can bring them to the police station. Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone unveiled the MedReturn Drug Collection Unit program Friday morning. Through the program, which extends out to 29 county communities, residents will be able to dispose of prescription drugs in a free, safe and easy manner through large green collection boxes found at the police station. “Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing problem in our communities,” said Leone Friday. Former Coach Indicted on Child Porn Charges

Grand Jury indicts 20-year-old Woburn man.

  A Woburn man was indicted on child pornography charges by a Middlesex County grand jury today, reported Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone Thursday afternoon. Raymond McAllister, 20, of Woburn, was indicted on charges of child enticement, dissemination of matter harmful to a minor, possession of child pornography, and posing a child in a state of sexual conduct. A former Woburn Little League coach, jiu jitsu instructor and volunteer at St. Mary's Bible Camp in Winchester, McAllister was in Woburn District Court on these charges in February. State Launches No Texting While Driving Program at WMHS Monday

AT&T and the Middlesex District Attorney’s office debuted the program and pledge by students to not drive and text in Woburn.

So you think you can drive and text safely? Especially if you’re a newly-minted young driver? The Middlesex District Attorney’s office and AT&T say you can’t. “You cannot text and drive safely,” Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone told an auditorium of Woburn Memorial High School students Monday morning. Together, the DA’s office and AT&T launched the “It Can Wait” program in Massachusetts Monday at WMHS. They showed a video produced by AT&T that emphasizes that trying to drive and text can be fatal. Sergeant in Sheriff's Office Arraigned on Drug Charges

A investigation begun in April culminated with yesterday's arrest in Woburn.

A Somerville man arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine while working for the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department was arraigned in Woburn District Court this morning. The Middlesex District Attorney's office reported that the defendant, Michael Dell’Isola, 51, was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail with the condition that he stays away from the Sheriff’s Department by Judge Paul Yee. His next court date is June 8 for a probable cause hearing.
