Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for Today, Tomorrow

State police on the lookout for people drinking and driving.

  The Massachusetts State Police will be conducting a motor vehicle sobriety checkpoint Friday, March 22 into Saturday, March 23, somewhere within Middlesex County, according to a state police press release. Police will be stopping vehicles to find potentially drunk drivers between somewhere in Middlesex County, which includes Burlington. As is normal practice, police do not disclose the hours or locations of the checkpoints. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," a State Police statement reads. Middlesex County Second Healthiest in Mass., Says Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Among Massachusetts' 14 counties, only Dukes County was healthier according to the study.

  Is Middlesex County the healthiest place in Massachusetts to live? If not, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says it's right up there. In a recent study done by the Foundation called "County Health Rankings and Roadmaps," Middlesex ended up second in the state, trailing only Dukes County overall. Even there, Middlesex County exceeded Dukes in some areas such as patient to doctor and patient to dentist ratios. In measures ranging from adult obesity and insurance coverage to premature death and teen birth rates, Middlesex County was at or exceeding the state average. Another Sobriety Checkpoint This Weekend

State police will set up a routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers somewhere in Middlesex County this weekend.

If you spot a state trooper camped out by the side of the road somewhere in Middlesex County this weekend, he or she may be doing more than just watching for speedsters. State Police Superintendent Col. Marian McGovern announced last week that a sobriety checkpoint will be established on an undisclosed public way in Middlesex County from Saturday into Sunday. The checkpoints, which are funded by a state grant, are routine operations performed by the state police. McGovern said in a press release that the purpose of the checkpoint is to further educate motorists and strengthen public awareness to the need of both detecting drivers who are operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and taking them off the road.
