Woman will serve in federal prison in Maine.
A Woburn woman was sentenced to federal prison in Maine this week after being convicted of taking part in a sham marriage. Catherine Nantume, 34, of Woburn, was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. in March. Monday, she was sentenced to one year in federal prison and three years of supervised release, reported the Bangor Daily News. Until her sentence begins Jan. 3, Nantume is at home and wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet. According to the Bangor Daily News, Nantume was part of a marriage fraud scheme that coupled African citizens with Maine residents. The participants were paid for their role in the marriages, said officials in the report.
