Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin updates residents on the storm.
Though the snow has mostly stopped, the prohibition on automotive travel is still in effect today until further notice. In Woburn, Department of Public Works crews are working to clear the roads, starting with a focus on emergency access for public safety officials, a release from Mayor Scott Galvin States. The mayor also asks residents to be patient and, while waiting for the ban to lift and the plows to finish their work, to check on elderly neighbors. The 2013 blizzard has arrived. What can we expect today?
After a day of snow in Woburn, the major snowstorm is forecasted to continue for much of the Saturday. According to WCVB-TV, by Friday Feb. 9, snowfall totals will likely total 18 -24 inches but 30 inches is possible in the region. The National Weather Service forecasted a high of 22 degrees with a wind chill factor of -3 degrees. Woburn could see gusts of up to 26 miles per hour. The snow has started to fall and Woburn is braced for its impact. Since we are all going to be watching the snow fall, we thought we should have some fun here on Woburn Patch. The above pictures of the Commons were taken at about 12:30 p.m. today. As the snow continues to fall we'll head back there and take some pictures to see how snowfall of up to 3-inches-per-hour changes the landscape. We'll also take a picture after the snowfall ends to really see just how much snow fell. Want to get involved? A blizzard warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
OK, so that two feet of snow we were preparing to get last night? Better add another foot to that. The National Weather Service on Friday morning adjusted its predicted snowfall totals to three feet. The timing of the snowfall is roughly the same: with light snow falling in Middlesex, Worcester and Norfolk counties Friday morning, and becoming heavy later in the afternoon and into the Friday evening commute. So, as WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner notes in his blog, you have a "few hours left this morning" to run some errands, but travel will deteriorate this afternoon. Today is Feb. 8, here are five things to know today: 1) Snow As we're sure everyone has heard, we are in for some snow today. According to the National Weather Service we can expect snow, mainly after 9 a.m. High temperature near 33 degrees. Snow tonight with 12 to 18 inches of accumulation possible. Do not park on the side of Woburn roads starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.
An emergency parking ban has been declared in Woburn to assist the Department of Public Works in clearing the streets after the snow begins to fall. According to a release on the City of Woburn web site, the emergency parking ban in effect starting at 6 a.m. Friday morning and will be in effect until noon on Sunday, Feb. 10. The ban means no on-street parking, either side of the street, during this time period.
