Holiday House Tour On Hiatus, Will Return

SCI Woburn opts to forgo the annual event in 2012.

For years, residents have opened their homes and hearts to holiday enthusiasts as part of the SCI Woburn Holiday House Tour. But there will be no tour this year, as the community organization has opted to turn the event into an every-other-year tour. In the past, these tours have allowed residents to tour some of the most interesting and festively decorated homes in Woburn," said Candice McLaughlin of SCI Woburn in a statement. "Always a good time, these tours provide a wonderful opportunity to get into the holiday spirit and enjoy the company of new and old friends alike." "Because SCI enjoys putting these Holiday House Tours together so much, we have decided to do them every other year as a way to keep the interest renewed in the event…

SCI Woburn rocks.

We know the SCI Woburn does some great stuff. And this summer they rocked the city by helping sponsor several summer concerts at Horn Pond. Here is John Murphy, Sr. V.P., Director of Business Development for Reading Cooperative Bank handing David Crowley, SCI President & Founder, a sponsorship check for last week's Pan Loco Steel Drum Band concert. Do you have a picture you'd like to share with us for Photo of the Day? Remember, all POTD come from readers, so without you, we have no photos! Text them to 781-502-8325 or e-mail woburn@patch.com. We will publish your photos as soon as we can!

Woburnites Open Their Decorated Doors for the Holidays

Holiday House tour is this coming Sunday, Dec. 4; tickets available at 3 locations.

Four elves between the ages of 4 and 9 spent time Friday decorating a circa-1888 home for the holidays. With help from Papa and Mama elf, they carried decorations down to the elegant first floor from the third floor attic. They hung ornaments—many hand-made—on one of the Christmas trees after Papa Elf wound the tree with red and green ribbon and crowned the tree with a bow. The boy elves even donated their hockey sticks for a holiday display on the wide front porch. Come Sunday, you’ll have a chance to see their work for yourself. The home of the Doherty family—Charles, Kathleen and Maura, 9, Joseph, 8, Jack, 6, and Thomas, 4—is one of seven that will be open to the public during the annual Holiday House tour this coming Sunday, Dec. 4, to…

"F" is for Fire Truck: Students Learn about Fire Safety

Turtlefun students get to check out a ladder truck in their parking as a result of a winning bid in the fall SCI auction.

The wheels on a bus, according to a kids’ song, go ‘round and ‘round. So do the wheels on a fire truck. And a fire truck is like a toolbox on wheels, students at Turtlefuns child care center learned yesterday when a Woburn Fire ladder truck came for a visit. Center owner and director Holley Snowden placed the winning bid in the Social Capital Inc. fall on-line auction for a ride to school on a city fire truck. Instead of transporting a student to school, Snowden arranged for a fire truck to come to Turtlefuns on Main Street. Fire Inspector Ricardo Gomez and firefighters Lt. Mike Reilly and John Nee led the children on a tour of the truck and its equipment, from a huge flashlight to cutting tools to hoses to medical supplies. They also …

Do You Deck the Halls?

Then you could be on this year's Woburn Holiday House Tour in December.

The Woburn Holiday House Tour Planning Committee is actively searching for homes to highlight during the Dec. 4 event. The committee met briefly last week to discuss the upcoming tour, which is scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m. and will (hopefully) include eight Woburn homes. Members are looking around the city for prospective houses, and would like to hear from residents about homes they would like to nominate for the tour. The homes are typically "the most historic and lavishly decorated" in the city, according to Planning Commitee documents. House hosts allow tour members into their homes for a short period of time to spread the holiday spirit. Guests are only allowed on the first floor and are careful to be respectful of homeowners while …
