School Committee Elects New Chairman

New chair will replace Michael Mulrenan for 2013 term.

  The Woburn School Committee elected a new chairman at its Monday organizational meeting. Denis Russell will serve as the 2013 School Committee chair. According to a brief statement on Twitter, school officials noted that the election was unanimous. Russell will take over the reins from School Committee member Michael Mulrenan, who served as the last chairman.

New Teachers' Contracts After several months of deliberations between the School Committee and the Woburn Teacher's Association, at Wednesday night's School Committee meeting, the School Committee ratified a new teacher's contract to run through August 31, 2013. Here's a quick rundown of the main points changed in the new teacher's contracts: Co-President of the Woburn Teacher's Association, Nancy Whalen, was pleased to sign the contract along with the School Committee to make the ratification official. School Committee Begins Budget Review; Supports "Green" Vehicle Policy

Officials add meeting on March 22 for more budget review.

The School Committee reviewed seven sections of the budget, most of which cover contracted amounts, last night, approving four; and also supported, after its first reading, a “green” policy for new school department vehicles. The policy covers only one vehicle:  the new driver education car, according to Joseph Elia, school assistant superintendent for finance and operations. That car would meet the requirement, he said. The city would get money for being “green,” according to committee member Dr. John Wells. In other action, the committee approved a policy that all school department employees wear photo ID badges—so they are visible—during the school day. The badges will allow access to the schools.
