Behind a 15-run offensive barrage, led by third baseman Meaghan Moore, and a two-hitter by Angela Pappalardo on the mound, the Woburn High softball team defeated visiting Melrose 15-3 Monday in a mercy-rule-shortened game. With the win, the 9-4 Tanners have now won five of their last six games. “We’ve been hitting the ball really well one through nine,” Woburn coach Courtney Nelson-Sigsbury said of her team’s recent success. All hands were on deck again Monday, but Moore stood out, going 3-4 with two triples, a double and a walk. Moore, the team’s cleanup hitter, drove in three runs and scored three more. Sprinters and jumpers carry Tanners to 81-55 victory.
In a meet between two of the top teams in the Middlesex League, Woburn’s sprinters and jumpers proved to be the difference. The Tanners’ sprinters won every individual running event from the 400-meter on down to the 100-meter, and the jumpers won all three of their events in the 81-55 win Tuesday over visiting Reading. With the win, Woburn remains undefeated, at 7-0. However, the Tanners still have to face the only other team to have beaten Reading (4-2), indoor champion Lexington, on Thursday, May 19, in a meet that should determine the league title. Tanners were edged out 7-6 by Chelmsford at home Wednesday.
After an impressive start to the season, the Woburn High boys’ lacrosse team dropped a tough non-league contest to Chelmsford Wednesday. With the teams knotted at 6-6 and just under five minutes left to play, Chelmsford’s Slade Forni found the back of the net off a pass from Eddie Sheridan for what would be the game-winning goal, as the Tanners moved to 4-2 with the 7-6 loss. “We didn’t execute as six offensive players today,” Woburn coach Ken Blaszka said. “Then, on defense, we didn’t do some of the little things.” Woburn jumped out to an early 4-1, as Casey Shea scored twice early, followed by goals from teammates Robby Mistretta and John Tobin.
