Tanners give Patriots too many opportunities in 6-1 loss.
The opportunity was too good to pass up for the underdog Woburn Memorial High School softball team against mighty Concord-Carlisle High School. In the first inning of their MIAA North Division 1 First Round matchup, the No. 13 Tanners tried to seize the early momentum against the No. 4 Patriots. Woburn coach Courtney Sigsbury sent senior Meaghan Moore home from second base on Kim DuLong’s single. But a rocket from the C-C left fielder just beat Moore to the plate, and she was tagged out by catcher Angela DeBruzzi to end the inning and the threat. Despite scoring a run in the third inning, the Tanners never really recovered from the play at the plate and fell to the Patriots, 6-1, to end their season. “We’re a 13 (seed) heading into a 4 and…

Tanners now 8-0 with one dual meet remaining.
In a battle between the last two undefeated teams in the Middlesex League, the Woburn High boys’ track and field team narrowly edged out Lexington 70-66 Thursday at home. Valerio Silva clinched the win for Woburn in the 200-meter dash, the meet’s third-to-last event. Silva, a junior, ran a school-record 21.9 seconds, beating Lexington’s Matt Hunter by 0.1, as the two ran two of the fastest times in the state so far this season. Had Hunter won, the teams would’ve tied, 68-68. “That was a phenomenal meet,” Woburn coach Mike Fowle said. “There were incredible performances all over the place.” Now, only three-loss Winchester stands between 8-0 Woburn and the league title. The two teams will face off sometime next week. Lexington, 7-1, the …

After an even first half, Woburn allows four unanswered goals in second to fall 7-3.
The Woburn High boys’ lacrosse team held pace with red-hot Winchester for a half Tuesday, before falling 7-3 at home. The Tanners fought back from a 3-1 deficit early in the second quarter to tie the game, at 3-3, by halftime. However, Winchester would find its gear in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals, two by junior Jesse Samek, which completed his hat-trick. Winchester (10-4, 6-1), which sits atop the Middlesex League standings with one-loss Lexington and Reading, has now won its last seven games. The Sachems last loss came against Hingham on Saturday, April 23. Woburn (8-7, 3-4) remains fifth in the league with the loss. Adam Tanner scored a transition goal with about seven minutes remaining in the second quarter to pull …
