Boys and girls teams score well at Middlesex Meet over winter vacation.
The Woburn Memorial High School boys' and girls' track teams competed in the Middlesex League Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston Dec. 26. Woburn scored high as a team, according to CoolRunning.com—Boys 73.00 and Girls 56.00. Juniors Valerio Silva, Michael McAdams and Rodrigo Costa placed in the top 10 at Saturday's state championship meet in their respective events.
The Woburn High boys’ track and field team had three runners and a relay team finish in the top 10 in the state Saturday at the MIAA Massachusetts All-State Meet at Bridgewater State University. Junior Valerio Silva led the way with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Junior Michael McAdams was ninth in the 400-meter hurdles, junior Rodrigo Costa 10th in the 110-meter hurdles, and the team’s 4x100-meter relay team took eighth. Based on his performance last week at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 state championships, Silva was seeded 11th in 22.61 seconds coming into the meet. Despite missing one of its best all-around athletes, the Woburn High boys’ outdoor track and field team placed third Saturday at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 championships at Bridgewater State University. The Tanners put up 50.5 points, behind champion Mansfield’s 126 and second-place Central Catholic’s 71. “It was a great team effort,” Woburn coach Mike Fowle said. “I’m really proud of how the kids performed.” In senior Craig Langes absence, Bobby Smith and Michael McAdams led the way for the Tanners, with teammates Valerio Silva and Rodrigo Costa making significant contributions as well. In a battle between the last two undefeated teams in the Middlesex League, the Woburn High boys’ track and field team narrowly edged out Lexington 70-66 Thursday at home. Valerio Silva clinched the win for Woburn in the 200-meter dash, the meet’s third-to-last event. Silva, a junior, ran a school-record 21.9 seconds, beating Lexington’s Matt Hunter by 0.1, as the two ran two of the fastest times in the state so far this season. Had Hunter won, the teams would’ve tied, 68-68. “That was a phenomenal meet,” Woburn coach Mike Fowle said. “There were incredible performances all over the place.” Now, only three-loss Winchester stands between 8-0 Woburn and the league title. The Woburn Memorial High School girls' track 4 by 200 relay team placed third in a competition last month, breaking a WMHS record. The team, which is made up of Stephanie Tarpy, Shannon Gay, Becky Lake and Kelly Garrity, came in with a time of 1:49.12 at the state relays at Whitman-Hanson High April 30. The 4 by 100 team—Chrissey Stangas, Kelly Garrity, Shannon Gay and Becky Lake—came in 3rd out of 37 teams and came in with a time of 51.7. The girls are coached by Sarah Bramley.
