Boys Hockey Impresses During Tie With Reading [VIDEO]

Woburn jumped out to a 3-0 first period edge before settling for a 3-3 tie against the Rockets, who are ranked in the top five in Massachusetts.

In January, Reading showed why it's ranked among the top teams in all of Massachusetts boys hockey when it blasted Woburn, 7-1. But on Wednesday night, the Tanners showed that they're not likely to go quietly come tournament time this month. Woburn pounced to a 3-0 lead in the first period on Wednesday night at Burbank Arena. Reading struck back with three goals of their own, but the Tanners held off a late Rockets charge to avenge their embarrassing loss with a 3-3 tie. Thanks to Wednesday's result, the Tanners are now 9-6-3 on the year with a 8-5-3 mark in Middlesex League play. The Rockets, meanwhile, are likely to get serious Super 8 consideration thanks to a record that currently sits at 14-1-5. "We were hoping we could catch them …

Tanners Begin Final Push Towards Postseason

Two weeks remain in the regular season as several teams have playoff aspirations.

Two weeks remain in the winter sports regular season, and several Woburn High School teams hope to continue their campaign for at least another game by finding playoff success. No Tanner teams are in action on Monday, but the week gets rolling with a pair of Woburn basketball teams hitting the hardwood on Tuesday. The boys basketball team, sitting in first place in the Middlesex League with a playoff berth already sealed up, travels to take on Belmont at 7 p.m. The Lady Tanners, meanwhile, are two wins away from a playoff appearance with two games to go. They host Belmont at 7 p.m. in a critical tilt. On Wednesday, the Woburn team having the best season is in action. The girls hockey team, in first place with a 13-0-3 mark, skates against …

Tanner All-Star To Be Inducted Into UML Hall Of Fame

Former Woburn resident led Tanners to soccer championship.

  (Editor's Note: The following information was compiled by UMass Lowell and submitted by the Paige family.)  On Sept. 29, Mike Paige will join the UMass Lowell immortals when he is inducted into that school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Currently living in Tewksbury with his wife Jill Paige, a current UML and Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Famer, he also has two daughters, Makayla (9) and Cassidy (6).  Mike is actively involved with the Tewksbury youth soccer program as well as continuing his own soccer prowess, playing in a Division II travel league. Mike played varsity soccer for Woburn High School with tri-captain status.  His senior year, he was voted by the Middlesex League coaches as MVP of the league and to the Eastern Massachusetts …

Commissioner's Cup champions!

  The Woburn Travel Girls U10-3 soccer team won the Middlesex League Commissioner's Cup Championship this past weekend in Woburn. The team was undefeated in the fall season, spring season and the Commissioner's Cup. Woburn Woman Earns Player of Year Award

Softball superstar led New England Collegiate Conference in batting.

  A Woburn woman has taken New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors for her softball performance this year. Lesley College's Jenna Fralick of Woburn was given the honor last week. In addition to Player of the Year honors, Fralick was also named to the NECC First Team, along with four of her teammates. Fralick led the league in batting with a .549 average during league games. She also had a 1.000 fielding percentage at third base. Fralick was a perfect 11-11 in stolen base attempts in NECC games. She finished second in the league with nine walks, third with 28 hits and ninth with 17 runs batted in. Overall, Fralick, the senior co-captain, is tied for second in the league in batting at .440 on the year, ranks fifth with 17…

WMHS winners!

  The Woburn Memorial High School girls' track team's 4x200 meter relay team competed at Whitman-Hanson High School over the weekend and placed sixth in their run. Kelly Garrity, Becky Lake, Stephanie Tarpy and Kristi Cirone ran the 4x200 in 1:50.94 and received medals at the Division II Massachusetts State Track Coaches' Association meet on April 29. Woburn Man Named USA Hockey Intern

Will begin communications job in June.

  A Woburn man will work with USA Hockey in June, according to the national hockey organization. USA Hockey announced that Brian Smith of Woburn is the recipient of the 2012-2013 Brian Fishman Internship. Smith will work in the communications department at USA Hockey's national office in Colorado Springs, Colo., beginning in June. According to USA Hockey, the Fishman Internship is awarded to a college graduate pursuing a career in athletic communications. Smith will graduate from Boston College later this month. Brian Fishman was the manager of communications and marketing for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. He died unexpectedly on Jan. 7, 1999, at age 28. The internship was dedicated to Fishman shortly after. "Being …
