Woburn takes on Middlesex rival Burlington in the North Division 1 opening round.
The Woburn High School boys hockey team has proven itself to be among the best teams in Division 1. Starting Sunday, they'll have the chance to prove just how good they are. Following a 10-6-4 regular season, the Tanners snagged the No. 4 seed when the North Division 1 brackets were released earlier this week. As a result, the team earned a quarterfinal date with Middlesex League rival and defending state champion Burlington on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The game is scheduled to take place on the ice of Chelmsford Forum. Whichever team advances past Sunday's game faces another stern task. The winner will play either No. 1 Chelmsford or No. 9 Melrose in the semifinal round. Woburn skated closely with Burlington during the regular season. On …

Led by its 16th year head coach, Woburn is postseason bound again this year.
The following questions were answered by Woburn High School boys hockey coach Jim Duran, who took over as head coach in 1997. The Tanners open their postseason quest in the first round of the North Division 1 playoffs on Sunday. Woburn, the No. 4 seed, battles No. 5 seed and defending state champion Burlington beginning at 4:30 p.m. How much does it help to have consistency with you having been with the program for 16 years? I think it helps. We have always been blessed with good players, good goaltending. I don’t think the whole coach thing makes a difference. I think discipline does and we have good kids, so that’s a recipe for a good team. Our kids have been great this year. We exceeded our expectations and it all comes down to …

Woburn junior Jeremy Flibotte has two shutouts in his last six games, leading the Tanners to a 4-1-1 mark in that span.
Jeremy Flibotte has short-term memory loss. If the puck goes in the net, he doesn’t remember it for long. The Woburn High School junior is the goalie for the Tanners hockey team, which is coming together late in the season and hoping to make a run in the Division 1 tournament. Flibotte’s talents were on full display on Wednesday in Reading. Though he allowed three goals after Woburn pounced to a 3-0 edge, he bounced back and stood tall as the high-powered Rockets peppered him with third period shots. His efforts between the pipes helped preserve a 3-3 tie. “You have to shake it off and pretend it’s 0-0 going into every period,” said Flibotte. “Just shake it off as quick as possible, and save the next one.” The junior has suffered a few …
Woburn jumped out to a 3-0 first period edge before settling for a 3-3 tie against the Rockets, who are ranked in the top five in Massachusetts.
In January, Reading showed why it's ranked among the top teams in all of Massachusetts boys hockey when it blasted Woburn, 7-1. But on Wednesday night, the Tanners showed that they're not likely to go quietly come tournament time this month. Woburn pounced to a 3-0 lead in the first period on Wednesday night at Burbank Arena. Reading struck back with three goals of their own, but the Tanners held off a late Rockets charge to avenge their embarrassing loss with a 3-3 tie. Thanks to Wednesday's result, the Tanners are now 9-6-3 on the year with a 8-5-3 mark in Middlesex League play. The Rockets, meanwhile, are likely to get serious Super 8 consideration thanks to a record that currently sits at 14-1-5. "We were hoping we could catch them …
Tanners open season with 2-2 road tie.
Showing up at Ristuccia Arena wasn't enough for the Woburn boys hockey team, even if it appeared that it would be for just over 44 minutes. The Tanners, widely picked as a top team in the Middlesex League and the state, outshot host Wilmington 39-12 in their season-opening tilt on Wednesday, and took a 2-1 edge into the final minute of play. But the Wildcats clawed back when Cody McGowan jammed home the game-tying tally with 21 seconds remaining, and Woburn settled for a 2-2 draw. "We have to play with a little more urgency," said Woburn head coach Jim Duran. "I think we think we're that good that we're going to step out on the ice and win the game, and that's just not going to happen." Daniel Holland gave the locals a 1-0 edge with 9:06 …
Casey Shea and Matt Baldino take to the ice in Haverhill
The city of Woburn has had its share of top hockey talent go on to big things. Today, Woburn is still producing top hockey talent, and two of the best skated at the Hockey Night in Boston Major Showcase in Haverhill. Woburn High star Casey Shea and Lawrence Academy standout Matt Baldino played for the Middlesex/Merrimack squad at the tournament.
