Woburn City Council Approves Medical Marijuana Dispensary Moratorium

The moratorium, which limits dispensaries in any zoning district, will be in place until January of 2014.

Woburn City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on applications for medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. According to minutes from the Feb. 5 City Council meeting, provided by Town Clerk William Campbell, the council voted 7-2 to approve the measure, which will be in place until Jan. 1, 2014. The move was in response to the passage of a ballot article that now allows medical marijuana in Massachusetts in the November, 2012 election. The passage of ballot question 3 allows for medical marijuana dispensaries, up to five in each Massachusetts county. The new law goes into effect January 1, but requires rules and regulations be set up by the Department of Public Health. According to the meeting notes, the purpose of the …

Obviously the stance they have is out of ignorance. They picture people dealing it from every corner and a joint in every mouth. They have no clue. The owners of these dispensaries would have as much to lose as a package store owner if there was abuse.Maybe more to lose as it would tarnish all dispensaries in the area. This is a typical stick your head in the sand approach.   more ›

Woburn City Council Considering Measures for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Woburn City Council is considering a moratorium and zoning changes on medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Woburn City Council is considering some moves to prevent, limit or at least regulate possible medical marijuana dispensaries in town. According to minutes from the Jan. 15 City Council meeting, provided by Town Clerk William Campbell, the council considered two different proposals, a moratorium and a zoning change. The moves are in response to the passage of a ballot article that now allows medical marijuana in Massachusetts in the November, 2012 election. The passage of ballot question 3 allows for medical marijuana dispensaries, up to five in each Massachusetts county. The new law goes into effect January 1, but requires rules and regulations be set up by the Department of Public Health. According to the minutes, Aldermen Michal Anderson…

The council needs to act soon, and designate an area they can be comfortable with, What about the area that is also zoned "Adult?" Failure to act soon will result in lawsuits costing the taxpayers time and money. You can regulate and restrict the area , that's fine, but act before the City ends up in court on some technicality.   more ›

Average Residential Tax Bill to Rise by $35

Quarterly property tax bills to be mailed before Dec. 31.

This action hits you in the pocketbook or wallet if you own property in Woburn. The City Council has set the tax rate for residential and commercial properties in the city for this fiscal year. The aldermen set the tax rate for residential properties at $10.40, up from $10.30 and for other properties at $26.83, up from $26.34. That means a mathematically “average” residential tax bill will go up by $35, according to Andrew Creen, the city’s chief appraiser. You’ll see the result of the council’s vote very soon, when you receive your property tax bill.  The bills will be mailed before Dec. 31, Creen, told Woburn Patch. Home owners in Burlington will pay $95 more in property taxes, Mayor Scott Galvin told the council during the tax rate-…

Library Expansion Still Up in the Air

After three hours of discussion Monday night, the City Council voted to leave the topic "in committee."

The Woburn Public Library expansion proposal is still on the City Council table, after three hours of discussion Monday night. Despite pleas from library supporters to allow the city to apply for the 2011 Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the council voted 8-1 to leave the topic "in committee."  By doing so, officials hope to pare down the $24 million expansion proposal. "If we can work it out to somewhere in the $15 million range, [it may work]," Mayor Scott Galvin said. "But we have to get to that number... I'm telling you right now, if we don't get to that, we can't submit a new plan." Galvin said Monday that if the project was scaled down to $15 million, the city could contribute to the project without having to ask the …

May I suggest the expansion supporters visit the Wyman School and how they expanded that "living, almost organic" Historical building. A breezeway to an efficient, modern, economically designed structure would be a far better solution than what is currently being proposed. I do like the comments about increasing efforts for private funding. Nice to see we can agree on at least one issue.   more ›

Five Things City Council Will Be Talking About Tonight

City Council committee met Monday to preview agenda items for tonight's session.

City Council committee met last night to preview several agenda items for tonight's meeting, which will be held in the board's chambers at City Hall at 7:30 p.m. Here's five things that will be on tap tonight:  1) Money transfer for ADA compliance Last night's discussion of the $40,000 transfer between a Hurld School boiler account and an Americans with Disabilities (ADA) compliance account was heated, but expect discussion to go smoother tonight.  Aldermen Ray Drapeau, Richard Gately and Rosa DiTucci questioned the transfer.  Drapeau focused Monday on why the School Department felt that the money could be moved out of the Hurld boiler account. "I want to ask you a question, what if you wake up on a nice cold winter day and it’s 10 degrees…
