Woburn tied the game, lost the lead and tied the game again within the final two minutes of the game before losing in the 10th round of the shootout to St. Mary's on Sunday.
Sunday's Division 1 girls hockey semifinal was a 10-round slugfest. So was the shootout that eventually ended the Woburn High School season. Though the top-seeded Lady Tanners twice tied the game during a wild final minute-plus of regulation, St. Mary's of Lynn eventually came out on top of a 10-round shootout to advance with a 4-3 win. Trailing 2-1, standout forward Kayla Smith evened things up with a goal with 1:31 left to play. But St. Mary's recaptured the lead just 18 seconds later, seemingly sealing a berth in the state final. Erica Lissner, however, had other ideas as she extended the Woburn season thanks to the tying tally with 33.5 seconds to go. After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout. Regulation wasn't enough …

The Lady Tanners entered the final period versus Billerica tied on Tuesday, but used a pair of late goals to advance into the Division 1 semifinal round.
Woburn High School junior Emily Lissner netted three goals on Tuesday night, and the top-seeded Lady Tanners needed every one of them to escape upstart Billerica in the Division 1 girls quarterfinals. The locals earned the victory despite falling behind 1-0 early on and entering the third period tied at 1-1. Lissner's second goal gave Woburn a 2-1 edge with 10 minutes to play, and she added her final tally with just over eight minutes to go. Though Billerica scored with less than one minute remaining, it was too late and the Tanners survived. As a result, Woburn will take on St. Mary's of Lynn on Sunday at Chelmsford Forum with a berth in the state championship game at TD Garden on the line. Are you a big fan of the Tanners? You'll also …

The Lady Tanners skate in the Division 1 quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Stoneham Arena.
The quest to bring a state championship banner home to Woburn High School during the winter season comes down to one team. Top-seeded, and widely considered the favorite to win it all, Woburn girls hockey is the final Tanner team remaining in the postseason after the boys hockey team fell to Burlington, 3-2, on Sunday. The girls team opened with a first round bye before taking care of business with a 4-2 win over No. 17 Andover in the first round. Next up is a date with Billerica on Tuesday at 8 p.m. If the Tanners can handle the bracket's No. 9 seed, they will advance to play in the Division 1 semifinal round against either St. Mary's of Lynn or Austin Prep. Looking ahead in the bracket, the winner of that game will advance to play for …

The girls hockey senior is among the best players in the state, and is hoping to add a state title to her resume.
Kayla Smith isn’t the most vocal player on the Woburn girls hockey team, which is ranked No. 1 in the state. Instead, she lets her play speak for her. The Woburn senior is one of the top players in all of girls hockey. Last season Smith was fourth in the state in scoring with 57 points and tied for fourth with 31 goals, according to ESPNBoston.com. “She’s a game-changer for sure,” said head coach Bob MacCurtain. “She’s quiet, she plays the game hard, and that’s what the kids take from her.” Smith is one of seven seniors on the team, and she fills her role of captain in more of a lead by example style as opposed to being a vocal leader, according to her head coach. The senior will be a critical piece for the Tanners in upcoming weeks. …

The Woburn girls hockey team earned another regular season title and is ranked No. 1 in the state thanks to its veteran coach.
The following questions were answered by Woburn girls hockey head coach Bob MacCurtain, who led the Tanners to a 16-0-3 record so far this year. That mark included a 13-0-2 record in Middlesex League play, good for a league title. The Lady Tanners are ranked by multiple media outlets as the No. 1 team in the state with the postseason just around the corner. What's been the key to your team's success this year? It’s all about the players for sure. Every year we have two goals. Win a league championship and win a state championship. I think every group that comes in sees the history on the wall of our locker room and wants to keep that tradition going. Why has the girls hockey program historically been so successful? We started strong 13 …
