Because the snow clean up effort is still underway Woburn Schools will be closed tomorrow.
Though the snow stopped falling yesterday, because of the large amounts covering the roads and sidewalks, Woburn schools will be closed tomorrow for safety reasons. Superintendent Mark Donovan tweeted the news that is sure to make Woburn students happy. "Because of the [additional] time needed to create safer conditions, schools will be closed tomorrow, Mon, 2/10. We plan on normal opening on Tuesday," Donovan tweeted. Have a fun and safe snow day.

Woburn Public Schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 8.
Good news for students in Woburn. Superintendent Mark Donovan sent out the Tweet they were waiting to hear. Woburn Public Schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 8, in anticipation of the snow storm that could become a blizzard. "Because of potential safety issues associated with impending snowstorm, all Woburn Schools will be closed tomorrow, Feb 8," Donovan tweeted. Also, according to the Woburn Memorial High School page, all sporting events have been cancelled for Friday and Saturday. Events Scheduled for Friday will be played today Thursday Feb 7th, same times and places. Have a fun and safe snow day!

New chair will replace Michael Mulrenan for 2013 term.
The Woburn School Committee elected a new chairman at its Monday organizational meeting. Denis Russell will serve as the 2013 School Committee chair. According to a brief statement on Twitter, school officials noted that the election was unanimous. Russell will take over the reins from School Committee member Michael Mulrenan, who served as the last chairman.

After Friday's school shooting in Connecticut, Superintendent Mark Donovan visited the schools Monday "because it seemed like the thing to do."
Superintendent of Schools Mark Donovan took time Monday to visit each of the city's public schools "because it seemed like the thing to do" after Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. Supt. Donovan checked in with each building's faculty and staff, and reported that elementary school students did not broach the subject of the Newtown shooting. But how does Woburn's graduation rate compare to other communities nearby?
Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Woburn Memorial High School does have a higher graduation rate than the state average. According to the preliminary state-reported data, for the 2010-2011 school year, Massachusetts had a four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate of 83 percent, which ties for 11th highest in the nation with six other states. Iowa had the highest rate at 88 percent. (See the PDF attached to this article for full results.) Mass Department of Transportation program encourages pedestrian safety and outreach programs.
Woburn is the 500th public school district to sign on with the state's 'Safe Routes to School' program. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced the city's participation in the federal program yesterday. The following text was provided by the Jimmy Fund Walk: On Sept. 9, 19 residents from Woburn will walk up to 26.2 miles along the historic route of the Boston Marathon in the 24th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai. They will be among the 9,000 walkers expected to participate with the collective goal of raising more than $7.5 million to support lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Lee Kille, of Woburn, is a four-time Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk participant and works as a custodian at Woburn Memorial High School. In 2008, Kille’s mother succumbed to liver cancer.
