Today is a big day for the city—children will start the school year at Woburn's 11 public schools and voters will cast ballots in the state primary election. "We look forward to welcoming back all of our students [today]," said Superintendent Mark Donovan. "This summer has been an especially busy one, but we will be ready to launch into the new year with some new and exciting things happening in our schools." In addition to the first day, parents and residents over 18 years old will be voting in the state primary city-wide. As students prepare to go back to school this week in Woburn, we offer parents a lesson on what to do with their children's medication. Although officials would prefer that medication be given to children outside of school hours, the city adheres to the state Department of Public Health policy for instances when medication must be dispensed during school, said Public Schools' lead nurse Marcia Skeffington. Nobody's as good as six-year-old Meggie Norton when it comes to knowing all the "Rules of the Bus," but here are a few Massachusetts' state laws about school buses you might not have known... #1. Everyone knows to stop when a school bus is loading and unloading passengers, but what you may not know is that if you don’t stop, you could get a ticket of up to $250. That fine can go up to $2,000 and a suspended license of up to a year for subsequent offenses. (MGL 90-14) #2. If you don't like getting stuck behind a bus, go a different route, leave earlier or later!!! Today in Woburn there is so much traffic, business and 2 Highways on or near Washington Street. So if the bus has to stop every 2 seconds oh well!! We need to keep the children safe. As for assigning a neighbor, Why???? Just stop for the school buses, Its the law!!!! more ›

New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.
According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also said that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abused drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on campus where students regularly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. …
