Not every girl wants to be Cinderella. That is true. They should choose not to attend the dance, which at our school is called "Ladies' Choice" dance. If they want to go to a baseball game instead, who is stopping them? Instead of running to the ACLU, maybe this parent with the complaint should have gone to a PTA meeting with some suggestions of other activities that could be held in addition to the dance, but not banning the dance. What is next? Maybe some girls want to play football. Should we ban football teams at the high school level? This is ridiculous. Cranston parents are outraged and are not going to just silently accept this decision.

If owners should "try" to leave their dogs in the back seat, should parents "try" to keep their toddlers in the back seat? No they should be in a car seat and a dog should be in the back seat, restrained if need be.

Paul, If you scrolled down a bit further before you jumped the gun to critiscize my mistake, you would have seen that I corrected my error. When I read the article very quickly it stated that the meeting was held at Western Hills, and I must have read it and misunderstood. I have a very busy life and am a multi-tasker. I hope I didn't disappoint you, seeing how you were "eagerly awaiting my next lie." Also I have to say that while I think debating these emotionally charged issues can be interesting, I find it so sad and really pathetic that people feel the need to attack one another personally, in this forum. People write things here that they would never say to people to their face. Things like mocking another's religion, or lack therof, is so ignorant. You have a right to your beliefs, but I doubt you would voice them so freely if you weren't hiding behind a computer.

Thank you Sox, for sticking up for teachers. It is so disheartening to hear teachers getting bashed all the time for things that truly aren't their fault. If you want to teach at a public school, you belong to a union. The evaluation system for teachers is definitely one that needs improvement, but teachers are not to blame for an faulty evaluation system. Are there bad teachers? Yes there are. Do some people get involved in teaching for the wrong reasons? Yes some do. Although Kate, I don't know too many who think to themselves while declaring a major, "I want to make a lot of money...hmm...teacher is the way to go. Maybe it's those snow days that really make being a teacher tempting (which by the way have to be made up in the summer, usually in sweltering heat). Many others like myself, became teachers to help educate our youth, and love doing it. Sox hit the nail on the head teachers are not solely responsible for the success of their students. Parents have a role, that some refuse to play. I could share stories that would make your mouths drop. Teachers have a lot on their plate. They don't want to be put on a pedestal for being teachers, but they certainly don't want to be bashed by people who have never set foot in a classroom. Also if being a teacher is such an easy, high paying job full of perks, why don't you seek a career change Kate?

Oops. For some reason I thought she attended western hills. The fact remains that she, is trying to get a payday out of this situation. I bet she doesn't complain whenshe gets good Friday off most years.

The best part is that the plaintiff is seeking compensatory damages with Interest! She does not even attend the school where the banner is Displayed! Boy, some people have a lot of time on their hands.

If you ever knew how many restaurants, bakeries, markets, etc. have been cited for unsanitary conditions you would starve. I believe Defusco's closed down voluntarily, but many places do not.

I was not trying to make the point that we should or should not accommodate non-English speaking students. The point I was making is that teachers are still held accountable for those students when they test poorly. It reflects badly on the teacher.

I taught in Providence public schools for 8 years. I still have many friends, along with a sister who still teaches in Providence. The reasons that Providence does not score high on these standardized tests is multi-faceted. First off, they do have a very large non-English speaking population, and also a very large special needs population. These children are expected to take the same tests as the main-streamed kids, regardless of their barriers, with very few accommodations. Also teachers in Providence are dealing with issues that teachers in more affluent communities may not have to deal with, such as kids who come to school poorly dressed, do not complete homework, not to mention they now have to serve breakfast and an afternoon snack in their classroom during class time. In my experience and that of my colleagues, parental involvement was scarce.

I believe that in the end the girl did go to the dance with another male. Also the mom's complaint was that it was a father/daughter dance when in fact, it was called something like Ladies Choice.
