ReplySome students require special services - OT, Speech, aides, and that also adds to the cost. Newton (as with every public school) is required to provide these services to the children that need them.

We should review each year if there is space for new METCO kids. I don't think Boston is going to send us $7.5 M. What I am stating is that when the current kids started in METCO, Newton (we) made a committment to them. I think attending school with kids who are not identical to every other student in Newton is a great experience. Yes, Newton should receive money from the program, and it does. I am stating that in my opinion you should not kick out any METCO students who are in the program, performing well, and we have made a committment to. When I use the word we, I mean WE as a community - the whole community, no matter what your view is or what my view is.

David,
Interesting comments. Do you speak from personal experience? Because in my personal experience the METCO students in my son's class SHOW UP and are PRESENT for conferences, student performances, etc.

Are you asking METCO to be dropped for next year? What about the kids that have spent six years IN Newton? You want to have them go back to Boston? We accepted these students, and they should finish up here.
In addition, one of my kids has NO METCO kids in her class. I think it was a space issue.

ReplyI believe in the overide, but I am also concerned about health insurance. Working for a private corporation, I pay over 50% for my monthly premium, and I have larger co-pays than most. I also have a 401(k) that I fund myself. I hope that the next contract negotiations involve honesty that Newton can not continue to fund 75% of the monthly health insurance premiums. It is time to think OUT of the box. I love our teachers, but if they really aren't happy with the benefits program, those teachers can find a different school district. I want us to attract great teachers, but at the same time, employees must know that the City can't afford to keep the premiums low.
I will vote yes for all three, but I am hoping that the administration can figure out a way to get more inline with private businesses, and not the "old" way of taking on responsibilities that the City can't afford.

We can't have visitors at our house. Our street has one driving lane in the middle. If someone parks in the street, no one can get by. I had this happen on another street, and I had to wait for the person to drop off their kid, and get back into the car. The plows got the street plowed. . . . down the middle with no room for parking on the residential roads.

We must live in a unique neighborhood. The bus stop is in a neighbors driveway, and they shoveled really well, and all the neighbors pitched in and shoveled the walks where possible. I know that we also shoveled access to the street (we are on a corner), however it is not where the ramp is, since the mound of snow is over 7 feet tall. . . . it is next to the mound. But cars aren't expecting people or kids to walk out of a snow mound. Drivers need to get off the phone and pay attention to the pedestrians.

I also believe that a two hour delay would be have been better. At noon Newton Center will be packed. All the kids will be out and about, and traffic will be heavy. No one is staying home today, except for the parents who are working - and their kids will be inside.
My deadend street was plowed by 6 AM this morning.
I really wish someone would let me know why Newton no longer declares delays. Do you think that the Patch can get the answer?
